This post hits the pride/ego a little bit. You see for years, I was pretty down on honey except for a few reasons (sore throat, allergy help), because it raised your blood sugar which in turn “causes weight gain and inflammation). I was entrenched in the understanding that the blood sugar battle was the most important way to combat weight and health issues from a nutrition standpoint. Blood sugar IS important, but there are deeper mechanisms in the body that (circadian rhythm, hormones)
So let’s dive in!
Honey is a sweet and natural food substance that is produced by bees from the nectar of flowers. It has been used as a sweetener and a natural remedy for centuries. Honey is not only delicious but also packed with numerous health benefits that make it an essential addition to any healthy diet.
Here are some of the benefits of using honey on a regular basis to improve your health:
Boosts Immunity
Honey has natural antibacterial and antioxidant properties that help boost the immune system. It contains antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic acids that help fight against free radicals, which cause cellular damage in the body. The antibacterial properties of honey also help fight against infections and diseases.
Helps in Digestion
Honey has a prebiotic effect, which means that it stimulates the growth of good bacteria in the gut. It also contains enzymes that help in the digestion of food. Consuming honey regularly can help prevent digestive issues such as constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion.
Promotes Wound Healing
Honey has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for wound healing. It has antibacterial properties that help prevent infection and also promotes the growth of new tissue. Applying honey to wounds and cuts can help speed up the healing process.
Provides Energy
Honey is a natural source of carbohydrates, which are essential for providing energy to the body. It contains glucose and fructose, which are easily absorbed by the body and provide an immediate energy boost. Consuming honey before exercise can help improve endurance and performance.
Improves Sleep
Honey can also help improve sleep quality. It contains amino acids that help in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation and sleep. Consuming honey before bed can help induce sleep and improve sleep quality.
Helps in Weight Management
Honey is a natural sweetener that is low in calories and has a low glycemic index. Consuming honey instead of processed sugar can help reduce calorie intake and prevent weight gain. The low glycemic index of honey also helps regulate blood sugar levels, which is important for weight management. A recent study involving diabetics had them take up to 12 tablespoons of honey per day and after 8 weeks they LOST 4-5 pounds on average and had a decline in their fasting blood sugar (many to levels that considered them no longer diabetic) compared to the control group who GAINED weight.
In conclusion, honey is a natural and delicious food that is packed with numerous health benefits. Consuming honey on a regular basis can help boost immunity, improve digestion, promote wound healing, provide energy, improve sleep quality, and aid in weight management. However, it is important to remember that honey is still a source of sugar and should be consumed in moderation as part of a healthy and balanced diet. The best sources are local and raw and can best be found at farmer’s markets!
